Origin Belgium, 1500s Bred down from Leauvenaar, a large black sheepdog, it is traced as far back as 1690. They were originally called Spits or Spitske but the name was changed to Schipperke in 1888. |

Physical Description Medium size dog with a short, thick body. Wide head narrows at the eyes giving a foxy apperance. The muzzle is tapered and equal in length with the skull. The nose is small,black and eyes are small and dark brown. Ears are small and triangler and erect and the tail is docked. |
Temperament Watchful, curious and courageous. This is a lively dog that is loyal to its family. The Schipperke will usually do fine with children and cats. This breed will deffend its territory against intruders. |
