Origin Europe, 1600s. The Drop eared version of this dog is called Phalene & the butterfly ear version is known as Papillon. They are recognized as seperate breeds in some contries, While others they are classified as the same breed. |

Physical Description Small, fine boned dog. Slightly longer than it is tall. The head is small with a thin tapered muzzle. The nose is small and black and the eyes are round and dark. The ears are large and erect, except for the drooping position of the phalene, they are the same. The tail is long, plumed and is carried arched over the back. |
Temperment Cheerfull & agile, this breed is intelligent & very friendly. They may be possesive of their owners but are not likely to ever be aggressive. They would be best with older children only and should do ok with other animals as long as they are socialized from puppyhood.. |
Living Conditions This breed will do ok in an apartment. Although they may bark alot at people or noises, so this must be considered. The Papillon does best in warmer climates. |
Grooming Brush 2 times a week & bath at least 2 times a month |
Exercise Low activity level. The papillon gets plenty of exercise indoors and does not require much exercise. |
Coat Texture Single coated, with long, silky, straight hair. |
Coat Colors Chesnut & white , Black & White, Tan & White, Black-Tan-White |
Puppies 2-4 pups per litter. Puppies need to be kept warm. You should be able to tell whether they are Papillon or Phalene at time of birth. |
