Other Names

Origin
Great Britain, Ancient Times

Companion, Guarding

Life Expectancy
This breed can live as long as 10-12 years of age

Weight & Height
170 to 190 pounds - (can be larger) & 27.5 (bitch minimum at shoulder) / 30 inches (dog minimum at shoulder)

Known Health Problems
Hip & Elbow Dysplasia. Also prone to bloat, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

Physical Description
Large, Powerful, heavily boned dog with a broad rectangular shaped head. The muzzle is short and ears are drop, small and v-shaped. The nose is dark and the eyes are brown. The chest is deep and wide and the long tail tapers.

Temperment
This breed is intelligent & they make a great guard dog. Firm handling is needed as they may be protective of their owner.

Living Conditions
They can live very happily in apartments - as long as they get out for at least 1 decent walk a day (about 20/30 minutes or so) - beside their regular potty walks.

Grooming
The smooth, short-hair - easy grooming. Bath or dry shampoo as necessary. Average shedder.

Exercise
Puppies exercise and play should be moderated - they should not go for long walks or runs. Adult mastiffs need moderate exercise - a nice walk or outside play is sufficient. They tend to be couch potatoes. Pulling is also a good activity - but should not be done until they have developed (at least not heavy pulling). Pulling goes back to them being part of the working group - it is one of their "purposes".

Coat Texture
Short, smooth coat.

Coat Colors
Fawn (some call a very light fawn "silver fawn"), Brindle and Apricot are the 3 recognized AKC mastiff colors

Puppies
Litters can range from 1 - and all the way up to 15 puppies. Litters of 10 or 12 are not rare. Obedience training is a must - mastiffs can be a little stubborn and do need a firm hand - b/c of how large they become obedience is very important. They are not a guard do in the sense of attacking a stranger. They are more prone to holding someone at bay than to physically attack someone.
