Origin Germany, 1900s The Dachshund comes in 2 sizes (Standard & Miniature) and 3 coat varieties (Smooth, Longhaired & Wirehaired). The smooth haired is believed to be the oldest of the dachshunds, once used as a tracker. The longhaired was problably created by crossing smooth dachshunds with short legged spaniels. The wirehaired was created by crossing smooth dachshunds with rough-haired pinschers and then later crossed with the dandie dinmont terrier. |

Temperament This breed is a loyal companion. They are sometimes independent. They are playful and a good learner.. This breed does not always do well with other animals and would do best in a home with older children. They may be somewhat difficult to train. This dog loves to dig and so special precautions should be taken to make sure it does not escape. Can be wary of strangers |

Grooming The smooth coat needs little grooming. The longhaired needs to be brushed daily and the wirehaired needs proffessional trimming |
Exercise Minimal exercise needed, Care does need to be taken not to over feed this breed as they can become overwieght |
